Why We Collaborated to Define Our Core Values and So Should You
Corporate values may seem like something large, slow-moving companies dish out and stick to the wall. With reprehensible behavior in Hollywood and in businesses around the US being drawn into the light, we wanted to make sure that we drew a line in the sand for acceptable behavior. At Bolste we felt that values were more than just words to hang up, but words to live by. We aren’t talking about words we would like to live by, or wished we lived by, but how we conduct ourselves today, and every day. When tough situations arise how do we handle it?
We wanted to make sure that who we are as a business is a positive environment that puts the customer first. As individuals, we draw from our personal values and look around us to what is socially acceptable. When those around us support specific behaviors, we start to see them as tolerable. These supported behaviors become the culture of the company, good, bad or indifferent. Many companies like to think they have positive values because they gave their employees printed trinkets listing them off. They probably also taped them to the wall. Because of this, we at Bolste thought it was time to define our values. We went about this a little differently than most companies.
While some companies determine their corporate values and hand them down, it was important for Bolste to look within. Every member of our team has personal values that they hold dear and make them the people with which we love to work. We wanted to make sure all voices were heard. It’s important to us that we truly live these values, so we started by polling our team to find out what they felt was important to them. Each team member responded with their own attributes that they admired, seek and value. We read each one. Many were the same; some were very different. The long list of qualities was examined and simplified so the core values that our team submitted remained. In the end, we had six values that we all agreed represents Bolste.
• Do it, own it – We’re accountable for the commitments we make and to each other.
• Be a window, not a door – We conduct ourselves with complete and open transparency.
• Better together – We collaborate to help our customers reach their goals.
• More integrity, less B.S. – We always strive to do the right thing, even if it’s hard.
• Passionate & Purposeful – We build products we’re proud of and that our customers love.
• Love what you do- We work hard, operate smart and have fun.
Designating our values as individuals, as well as collectively as a company allows us to build our culture upon a solid foundation of our values. As we grow, we will look to hire like-minded individuals who share our values, to improve and to maintain our culture. We can’t help but feel that by establishing who we are and working to preserve that, we can best serve our customers, provide a positive working environment and create the best possible product.
